[Text reads: Hi Shayna,
Thanks for getting in touch with us. I’m very sorry for the offensive Slimful ad. It wasn’t our intention, and we certainly don’t want to lose you over something like this. If it’s all right with you, I’m going to pass your email on to our ad team, and they’ll be able to share it with the advertiser.
Again, my apologies. If there’s anything else I can do, please let me know.
Thanks,Eric C.Hulu Support]
As some of you may know, there’s a product called “Slimful” out there now with some pretty disgusting ads. Hulu has been playing one sometimes that’s basically a woman encouraging viewers to not eat and be “pretty” instead. Their tagline is “Eating less is a beautiful thing.” I SHIT YOU NOT. THAT’S ACTUALLY THEIR MOTTO.
So I was getting really sick of seeing it. I mean, this is yet another diet food that, rather than encourage people to either eat whatever the fuck they want or, if they’re promoting health, eat something healthy as a snack, it’s telling people to eat a 90 calorie bar…and that’s it.
Not only is it just a gross idea, it can be triggering for those with eating disorders. So I decided to try contacting Hulu about it and letting them know how I felt. This is the response I got today.
I’m actually pretty happy right now. I know that it’s possible nothing could come of this, but the fact that he apologized not for “me being offended” but for the ad itself being offensive (more like a true apology) is great. Also, passing it along to the people working in advertising is also great.
I encourage anyone else that’s a Hulu user to do the same, and maybe enough outcry will get Hulu to stop working with them and allowing them to advertise on Hulu.
